An ivory ground carries a flowing floral jaal in brown and ochre across this Vanaspati modal saree, printed by hand with vegetable dyes in Bagru. Vanaspati printing draws its colour entirely from plants, which is why the browns here feel warm rather than flat. The jaal covers the body in an unbroken lattice of blooms, and the modal keeps it all soft and moving. A brown and ochre striped pallu completes the drape. Elegant for daytime weddings and festive lunches.

The craft
Vanaspati Modal Silk
Vanaspati takes its name from the word for plants, and it is Bagru's vegetable dye tradition: colour drawn from madder root, indigo leaf, pomegranate rind, turmeric and myrobalan rather than from chemicals. Each length is washed, treated with harda, stamped block by block and then dried in the Rajasthan sun, so no two pieces are ever quite alike and the shades deepen with age. On modal, a soft plant based fibre with a gentle sheen, these living colours settle deep and the saree drapes beautifully.
