Fine indigo stripes run across the ivory body of this Vanaspati modal saree, each line laid by hand with a Bagru block and coloured with plant dye. Stripes give a saree a clean discipline and they flatter the way modal pleats fall. The fabric stays light and fluid through the day. An ivory pallu printed with mustard and indigo leaves, finished with a brown band, gives the drape its quiet weight. Suited to festive days and family celebrations.

The craft
Vanaspati Modal Silk
Vanaspati takes its name from the word for plants, and it is Bagru's vegetable dye tradition: colour drawn from madder root, indigo leaf, pomegranate rind, turmeric and myrobalan rather than from chemicals. Each length is washed, treated with harda, stamped block by block and then dried in the Rajasthan sun, so no two pieces are ever quite alike and the shades deepen with age. On modal, a soft plant based fibre with a gentle sheen, these living colours settle deep and the saree drapes beautifully.
