Deep brown carries golden fern leaves across this Vanaspati modal saree, each frond hand stamped with a Bagru block and coloured with vegetable dye. The fern is drawn here with a fine and confident line. Modal gives the saree a fluid fall and a soft sheen that shows as the pallu moves. A sage coloured pallu, banded and geometric, brings a striking finish. Suited to festivals and happy occasions.

The craft
Vanaspati Modal Silk
Vanaspati takes its name from the word for plants, and it is Bagru's vegetable dye tradition: colour drawn from madder root, indigo leaf, pomegranate rind, turmeric and myrobalan rather than from chemicals. Each length is washed, treated with harda, stamped block by block and then dried in the Rajasthan sun, so no two pieces are ever quite alike and the shades deepen with age. On modal, a soft plant based fibre with a gentle sheen, these living colours settle deep and the saree drapes beautifully.
