Lotus vines cover the coral body of this Kalamkari Kanchipuram saree, every flower and leaf drawn with a kalam pen and filled by hand in madder, indigo and iron black. Long necked swans step between the stems along one edge, the bird that carries discernment in South Indian imagery. A broad gold zari border on deep purple frames the painting and lifts the warm ground. Srikalahasti artists build colour like this over many washes with natural dyes. A rich saree for weddings, temple festivals and celebration evenings.

The craft
Kalamkari Kanchipuram
Kalamkari is a centuries old hand painting art from Andhra Pradesh, most famously from Srikalahasti, where every motif is drawn freehand with a bamboo pen called a kalam and set with natural dyes. Scenes from mythology, temples, peacocks and lotuses are painted onto silk over many patient days. A wearable work of art, treasured for festivals, weddings and special occasions.
