Fine orange and gold stripes run the length of this Kanchipuram silk saree, closing into a deep magenta border edged in pure two gram zari. The stripes give the drape a lovely vertical rhythm and the zari brightens as the pleats sway. Orange with magenta is a pairing South Indian weavers return to again and again because it flatters every complexion. The silk is substantial and falls beautifully. A joyful saree for weddings, receptions and festival evenings.

The craft
Kanchipuram Silk
Woven in the temple town of Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, from pure mulberry silk and real zari. Its hallmark is the korvai technique, where a contrast border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked to the body for lasting strength. Rich temple, check and floral motifs make it a treasured wedding heirloom.
