Gold zari checks are woven across a black body on this Kanchipuram silk saree, and the drape closes into a deep maroon border banded with pure two gram zari. The grid of gold against black is quietly dramatic, and the maroon warms the whole piece. Pure mulberry silk gives the saree its weight and its shine, and the zari brightens with every movement of the pleats. A handsome choice for weddings, receptions and festival evenings.

The craft
Kanchipuram Silk
Woven in the temple town of Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, from pure mulberry silk and real zari. Its hallmark is the korvai technique, where a contrast border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked to the body for lasting strength. Rich temple, check and floral motifs make it a treasured wedding heirloom.
